Pibor administration launches Disaster Management Council to address challenges

Authorities in Greater Pibor Administrative Area have on Monday launched a Disaster Management Council.

The disaster management council is tasked with addressing alarming frequency of severe drought, cholera outbreaks, water shortages, persistent inter-communal violence, and seasonal flooding.

The launching was spearheaded by the Chief Administrator, Peter Guzulu Maze under the theme “Ensuring Disaster Risk Governance for Community Resilience in GPAA”.

Greater has recorded 906 cases and 155 fatalities within two weeks and other cases emerge daily.

Guzulu during the launching emphasized the urgent need for a structured approach to handle the escalating disasters faced by GPAA.

The Chief Administrator highlighted that the region  is facing serious disasters which are impacting the livelihoods and well-being of the community.

“We must equip ourselves with effective governance mechanisms to mitigate these risks, while fostering resilience among our people.” He said.

Chief Administrator urged the Ministry of Disaster and Humanitarian Management to recruit local youth in disaster coordination roles.

“This initiative would not only create job opportunities but also empower the community to play an active role in disaster management and information dissemination, ensuring timely responses to evolving situations in the GPAA.” He added.

He encouraged all stakeholders including community members, partners to unite and be proactive to ensure the safety and prosperity of  GPAA.

He applauded the Ministry of Humanitarian and Disaster Management for their support, particularly for sending their Director General to oversee the formation and launching of the Disaster Risk Management Council in GPAA.

The launching programme brought together representatives from civil society, international partners, law enforcement agencies, youth and  women.
