Authorities in Pigi County of Jonglei State have expressed concern over the dire humanitarian situation in Shabnil, an area within Malakal-Upper Nile State, where thousands of residents have fled to seek safety.

According to the Director of Information in the Commissioner’s Office, Monykuer Lam Ayul, the mass displacement has been triggered by ongoing insecurity attributed to SPLM-IO forces, forcing over 14,000 people to leave their homes in the county.

Ayul reported that the majority of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) are women and children who require specialized support, including protection, access to education, and healthcare.

“We call upon local and international humanitarian organizations, governments, and stakeholders to prioritize the plight of these IDPs from Pigi County,” Ayul said.

“The immediate needs of these individuals include access to safe shelter, clean water, food, and medical care. Your swift response is essential to mitigate their suffering and restore a sense of normalcy,”he stated.

He further emphasized the need for targeted assistance to ensure that displaced families can access basic necessities to begin rebuilding their lives in safety and dignity.

Ayul also noted that some IDPs have been separated from their families and are in need of psychosocial support and addition to healthcare services.
