Authorities in Yei River County of Central Equatoria state have called for urgent help after registering over 200,000 South Sudanese returning home from Uganda.

Addressing media on Tuesday, the county Director for Relief and Rehabilitation Commission for Yei River County Mabe Moses said that the county has been receiving returnees on daily basis.

He added that the number has overwhelmed the available resources since it has reached to hundred of thousands.

“People are steadily returning to the area, with over 200,000 individuals having voluntarily come back without formal repatriation. They have been registered and are now resuming their lives at home,” he stated.

He added that most of those who returned home expressed disappointment over ratio cut in many refugee camps in Uganda.

The Director added that, coupled with food shortage, most refugees were not allowed to have enough land for Agriculture.

He appreciated the returnees and urged them to engage in Agriculture as one way to fight food insecurity.

“For those who are retuning home voluntarily I appreciate you and urge you to use the available land to cultivate, for this is the only sure way we can fight food insecurity and eventually eradicate it” Moses said.

“Our land is fertile and if we continue with food production, we can one day supply the whole country with food, even now some of our products are being consumed in the Juba market and we need to double our efforts” he said

Yei River County Emmanuel Taban Seme also urged the residents in town to own farms and produce food to eat as means of fighting food insecurity.

Director for Agriculture Yei River County, Asiki Isaac reaffirmed government support to supporting Agriculture in the county.

He called on all the farmers to practice effective and modern farming that increase the yield.
