Bor County recorded a resounding 5–0 victory over Yirol East County in the opening match of the Peace and Unity Wrestling Tournament held on Saturday at Tiengkuei Field (Meny-Meny) in Bor.

The tournament, organized under the auspices of Jonglei State, aims to foster peace, unity, and talent development among young people through the traditional sport of wrestling.

In the first bout, Akol Agok Löth Nyoor of Bor County defeated Mathem Agut-Chot of Yirol East County, setting the pace for Bor’s clean sweep.

Representing Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok at the event, State Minister of Cabinet Affairs Kuony Yien Nyuon highlighted the importance of wrestling as a tool for social cohesion.

“The primary aim of this initiative is to uncover and nurture wrestling talents within our communities and their neighbors,” he said.

“Many of our youths possess exceptional abilities but have lacked platforms and mentorship to showcase their skills beyond the state. Today, we take a bold step toward bridging that gap,” he added.

Bor County Commissioner Samuel Ateny Pech Ariik stressed that the tournament extends beyond competition, noting its role in addressing social challenges such as drug abuse while instilling unity, discipline, and selflessness among youth.

The Lakes State Commissioner also lauded the initiative, describing it as a powerful instrument for strengthening community bonds and fulfilling the aspirations of young people for a brighter future.

During the launch, Ladder Forwarders Co. Ltd presented a trophy to the tournament organizers, reaffirming their commitment to youth empowerment and cultural preservation.

As part of the rewards, Bor County wrestlers received a cow and a bull, while the Yirol East team was given a cow. The JongleiState government further pledged an additional cow and bull to the Bor County team in recognition of their victory.

With Bor County’s emphatic win over Yirol East, the Peace and Unity Wrestling Tournament is officially underway. More matches are expected in the coming weeks, bringing together teams from across Jonglei and neighboring states to compete for the championship title.
