Civil Society calls for release of First Vice President Riek Machar

A Jonglei-based Civil Society Activist has urged South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir to release First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar from house arrest, calling on both leaders to demonstrate their commitment to peace.

Machar was reportedly detained on Wednesday at his residence by the Minister of Defence and the National Security chief.

Bol Deng Bol, Chairperson of the Jonglei Civil Society Network, also called for the release of other SPLM-IO members still in government custody.

“For the interest of the South Sudanese citizens who are suffering in the hands of armed and violent military groups across the country including SSPDF, UPDF and other civilian armed groups, I would like to strong urge the SPLM-IG to immediately release the First Vice President.” He pointed.

He urged both Kiir and Machar to end armed confrontations and prioritize peace.

Bol further advised the SPLM-IO and SPLM-IG factions to adhere to the revitalized peace agreement when addressing their disputes.

Additionally, Bol welcomed the arrival of Kenya’s special envoy to South Sudan, Raila Odinga, who is set to mediate between the two leaders in an effort to de-escalate tensions.

“We acknowledge and appreciate these unwavering efforts and therefore,take this opportunity to welcome Kenya’s Special Envoy.” He stated.

“Even as we closely monitor the situation with grave concerns. We are calling upon the diplomatic Missions and Kenya’s Special Envoy, along with the African Union’s Penal of the Wise to persuade President Salva Kiir Mayardit to free his First Vice President, Dr.Riek Machar from the house arrest prior to a direct dialogue between the two principals to see to it that the situation is successfully de-escalated.” He said.

He furthermore called for resumption of the Tumaini Peace Initiative without further delays.
