Overnight flooding in Ganyliel Payam, Panyijiar County of Unity State has submerged the town’s primary health facility and its airstrip.

This has led to displacement at least 24 patients and putting essential medical services on hold, local authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Peter Yoak, Panyijiar County’s Health Director of Panyijiar, told the Nile Witness that the health facility has been underwatersince last night, with no immediate relief in sight.

“The compound is full of water. There’s no way to move patients or access the facility. Even now, the patients are still suffering,” Yoak said.

Among those displaced are 13 men and 11 women, many of whom had to be relocated to nearby highlands within Ganyliel town.

Health workers struggled through the night to evacuate the patients as floodwaters rapidly rose.

This latest disaster not only crippled the Primary Health Care Center (PHCC), but also rendered Ganyliel’s airstrip unusable, further complicating any emergency response or medical evacuation plans.

Yoak appealed to both state and national governments, calling for immediate support to pump water out of the facility and restore basic operations.

“We need generators and emergency equipment to remove the water. The health of our people is at risk,” he said.

Ganyliel is one of several flood-prone areas in Unity State, where annual heavy rains often devastate infrastructure and displace thousands.

However, local officials said this year’s flood has been particularly destructive, coming at a time when the health system is already strained by limited supplies, staffing shortages, and ongoing recovery from past conflicts.
