The former Deputy Governor of Jonglei State, now serving as the national Minister of Trade and Industry, has outlined the key challenges facing the state and urged the newly appointed governor to address them.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony for Governor Dr. Riek Gai on Saturday, Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk emphasized the need to address insecurity and revenge killings in the state.

“There have been cases of revenge killings, particularly in the counties of Ayod, Akobo, Yuai, Uror, the whole of Duk, and Twic East. In one of the fightings 19 people lost their lives and up to now that case has not been resolved. As you assume the office, it will be important to look into that case. It is vital for the overall peace in Jonglei State,” Atong stated.
She urged the new governor to engage with Pibor leadership to put an end to cattle raiding and the abduction of women and children.
Additionally, Atong called for intervention in the ongoing disputes within the Episcopal Church of South Sudan in Jonglei State, which she said have caused divisions among local communities in Bor.
“This issue is currently before the President of South Sudan, but it is vital for you to also look into it,” she added.
She further highlighted the urgent need to address violent gang activities that continue to terrorize the state.
She further advised the governor to facilitate the integration of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Protection of Civilians (PoC) site into local communities.
Atong also appealed for continued support from humanitarian partners in aiding the people of Jonglei State.
” While the government has a lot of significant role to play, there will always be gaps. I urge humanitarian organizations to continue assisting the new governor in addressing these challenges,” she said.
She furthermore called for unity and harmony among the nine counties of Jonglei State to foster lasting peace.
Atong Kuol has previously served in the Jonglei State government as Minister for Information, Health, Animal Resources, Fisheries, and Tourism, as well as Deputy Governor.
