Jonglei Civil Society Network has condemned the bombing of innocent civilians in Akobo County of Jonglei state.

On Tuesday afternoon, authorities in Akobo reported that a gunship targeted two commercial vehicles travelling from Akobo West to Akobo East.

However, there were no casualties reported since the passengers jumped out of the vehicles.

The network in statement by Chairperson Bol Deng Bol, seen by The Nile Witness described the attack on innocent civilians as brutal and inhumane.

‘’We unequivocally denounce this senseless act of violence against unarmed civilians, which constitutes a grave violation of human rights and international humanitarian law.’’ said Deng

‘’The targeting of non-combatants in conflict is not only unacceptable but also undermines efforts toward peace, stability, and coexistence in South Sudan.’’ Deng added.

The network also called for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the atrocity for justice to be served.

It further called upon the country’s leadership, regional and international bodies, and all stakeholders to prevent further attacks on the civilians.

‘’The people of South Sudan have endured too much suffering. It is imperative that all parties commit to the protection of civilians, adherence to the rule of law and pursuit of lasting peace.’’ He said.

Early this week, SSPDF gunship bombed Nasir County killing 21 people amidst increasing tension between President SalvaKiir and his Vice President Dr Riak Machar.
