Authorities in Jonglei state in collaboration with Intrepid South Sudan with funding from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) South Sudan, Intrepid South Sudan (ISS) in collaboration with the Government of Jonglei State through the Ministry of Peacebuilding, will on Saturday, September 20, commemorate International Peace Day in Bor town.
The event, themed “Ana Junub, My Culture, My Pride. My Country” and running under the slogan “Peace is Me”, comes at a time when Jonglei State continues to grapple with intercommunal clashes, intra-communal violence, and recent civilian–SSPDF confrontations.
According to ISS, the occasion will provide communities with a platform to showcase their culture, exchange ideas, and promote peaceful coexistence.
It will also serve as an opportunity to highlight the importance of empowering youth and women in the peacebuilding process.
Bol Deng Bol, Executive Director of Intrepid South Sudan, stressed the significance of the event, noting that peace cannot be left to chance.
“Jonglei State has for too long been marred by violence and mistrust. This Peace Day is not just symbolic—it is a reminder that peace begins with us. Through culture, dialogue, and inclusion of youth and women, we can rebuild the social fabric and move towards lasting harmony,” Bol said.
The program will feature speeches from government officials, UN agencies, civil society leaders, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Entertainment will include performances by cultural groups, poets, and South Sudan’s iconic musician Anyar-Yol Mathiang, who is expected to inspire the audience with music centered on unity and reconciliation.
Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok and the Minister for Peacebuilding,Gabriel Malual Kon, are expected to headline the ceremony, alongside other dignitaries.
International Peace Day, observed globally on September 21, was established by the United Nations to strengthen ideals of peace through dialogue and nonviolence.
In Jonglei, where the scars of conflict remain deep, the commemoration is anticipated to spark renewed commitment to reconciliation and stability.
