Brig. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit, son of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has reportedly been promoted to the rank of Major General within the Internal Bureau of the National Security Service (NSS).
The reported promotion was made public through a congratulatory message from Atem’s brother, Bol Abuk, who described the elevation as “well-deserved” and wished him strength and wisdom as he takes on greater responsibilities.
Atem currently serves within the NSS Internal Bureau, and the reported promotion would mark a further advancement in his career within the country’s security sector.
The development has attracted public attention because of Atem’s family connection to President Salva Kiir and his position within the national security establishment.
However, details surrounding the reported promotion, including when it took effect and the responsibilities attached to the new rank, remain unclear.
The promotion has not been independently verified through an official announcement from the National Security Service or the presidency.
Efforts by Nile Witness to contact the spokesperson for the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), Maj. Gen. Lual Ruai Koang, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The report is therefore based on publicly circulated information, pending official confirmation from the relevant authorities.
