The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) has issued a flood alert as water levels in several of the country’s key rivers continue to rise, posing a risk of mild to moderate flooding downstream.
The announcement, made through a daily weather update today, August 29, warns communities in flood-prone areas to be vigilant.
According to the MWRI’s report, real-time monitoring of the rivers shows concerning trends at multiple locations. While the water level in Juba is slightly decreasing, it remains at an “alert level.”
Other areas that are facing a more immediate threats: Mangala where water levels have reached a “high flood threshold” and are holding constant, indicating a significant risk, Bor & Malakal; Water levels are at “alert levels” and are still rising and Anakdiar; The water level is at an “alert level” and is increasing.
The ministry stated that the high or above-alert levels across most monitoring stations mean that communities located downstream should prepare for potential mild to moderate flooding.
This alert follows a series of warnings issued by the MWRI as the rainy season progresses.
The ministry has been consistently monitoring the situation to provide early warnings and help communities prepare for potential displacement and property damage.
The MWRI’s Press Unit urged citizens to stay alert and share the information to help keep others informed and safe.
