Nzara’s new pediatric ward opens, Bishop Calls for Healing with Compassion

The newly inaugurated Graham Pediatric Ward at St. Theresa Mission Hospital has opened its doors, bringing hope to children and families across Western Equatoria State and beyond.

Graham Pediatric Ward at St. Theresa Mission Hospital was funded by Canadian donor Graham, the modern facility is dedicated to providing quality care for newborns and young children form 5 years below in South Sudan.

On August 13, 2025 the ward admitted its first patients a one-year-old Godwill and his three-year-old sister Nakindo both suffering from severe malaria. Their parents, subsistence farmers from Nazireagbe village, traveled 25 kilometers to Nzara to seek treatment.

During the first admissions, the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio Bishop, Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala addressed the medical team, urging them to serve with empathy.

“Most of the people close to Jesus were sick people, some even considered untouchable,” Bishop Hiiboro said.

“This is a center for healing, not only for physical sickness but also for the spirit. Healing begins with kindness and compassion.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Poni James, one of the ward’s physicians, described the opening as a blessing for the south Sudanese community.

“This center will help us provide quality healthcare for children and ensure our services continue to grow,” Poni said.

Hospital administrator Mr. Benson Wakoli thanked the community for their role in making the ward a reality.

“This facility is unmatched in the state,” Wakoli said. “From cleaners to support staff, every member of the team contributes to the healing process.”

Construction of the Graham Pediatric Ward began in September 2024 and was completed on August 1, 2025as well commission it.

The project stands as a symbol of what faith, community effort, and international support can achieve in improving child healthcare in South Sudan.
