A cholera outbreak has been declared in Greater Pibor Administrative Area with the authorities confirming 621 cases with 41 deaths.

The authorities reported that the first case of the cholera epidemic was recorded on 13th March 2025.

Peter Guzulu Maze, Greater Pibor Chief Administrator in a statement issued Friday, said the 41 deaths were recorded in Pibor, Lekuangole and Gumuruk counties.

‘’Tragically, our Administrative Area has already recorded a total of 41 deaths attributed to cholera—2 in Gumuruk County, 21 in Pibor County, and 18 in Lekuangole County. However, I believe the actual death toll is higher than currently reported due to lack of accessibility to medical facilities in the counties and certain areas within GPAA.’’ He said.

‘’In response to the alarming rise in cases of cholera and the health crisis affecting our communities, I  hereby declare a Cholcra Epidemic in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area effective immediately.’’

Guzulu stated that the National Ministry of Health has been notified of the cholera outbreak.
He also decried shortage of medical supplies and staff at Pibor Hospital and called for quick intervention.

‘’I call upon all partners, humanitarian organizations, and the national government to urgently rescue the people of GPAA in combating this cholera epidemic.’’He added.

He said all ministers in Pibor were instructed to procure essential medications from the local clinics to treat the patients.

Mr. Guzulu pointed out that Médecins Sans Frontieres(MSF) managed to mobilize and transported medical supplies from Boma County, and promised to provide additional support.

He urged all residents to remain vigilant, maintain social distance, practice good hygiene, and avoidswimming in crowded areas of the river when the weather is too hot.

He further advised the residents to use a mixture of sugar and salt as a homecare remedy and seek medical attention immediately.

At least two million cholera vaccines were donated to the country by global health agencies as part of international efforts to control the spread of the disease.
