While the Country faces several difficulties such as persistent armed conflict in some parts, economic crisis among others, eyes are set on National Assembly to intervene.
As matter of urgent some members of the public including members of parliament, Civil Society, politicians among others demanded Jemma Nunu Kumba, the Speaker ofTransitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) ensure urgent re-opening of the Assembly.
The Members of Parliament were expected to resume their business in the first Month of April 2025 according the recess declaration that was made by speaker Nunu in December 2024.
“I Jemma Nunu Kumba speaker of the National Legislature, RSS do hereby declare recess till
the first Monday of April 2025” Nunu said during the declaration of the recess” Nunu declared in December 2024.
In an interview with this out outlet, Daniel Juul Nhomngek a member of parliament representing Cuiebet county, Lakes state on Sudan People Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) ticket expressed that some of the challenges can be handle by the assembly.
“If the Assembly was working it could have solved some of the issues or problem the country is facing now” Juul said.
“The Assembly may delay to open because the country is now concentrating on issues of the security but all activities are inter-connected and there is need for parliament to be reopen and law makers start their work” he added
He urged the speaker as well as the government to speedup the re-opening of the Assembly.
“The government should understand that the vital organ in dealing with issues of government is the parliament, parliament is the center and it has to be reopened” he reiterated
However, in his respond to the re-opening of the TNLA, Oliver Mori Benjamin spokesperson and chairperson of the Information Committee expressed the Assembly speaker is in consultation with the President in regarding the opening as stated in the law.
“I said you should wait; I have not received a call and the speaker according to our regulation have to consult the President for both recess and re-opening as well” Mori said.
The spokesperson expressed optimism that the Assembly will soon reopen and the law makers would resume their normal business.
Meanwhile according to the parliament code of conduct 2011 amended 2021, the National Legislative Assembly scheduled to open on first Monday of April each year.
On his part Chol Pather a member of Legislative Assembly reiterated that the current crisis whether in regards to peace agreement as well as economic need urgent deliberations by the law makers.
He expressed that the house of representative need to reopen so that to respond to the current challenges facing the Citizens who elected them into the Assembly.
“There is need for the speaker to make sure that the Assembly re-opens so that the law makers are engage in handling the current challenges facing the people who elected them into power” Pather said.
He emphasized the Assembly that compromises of the parties to the agreement have a role to unite and condemn the Executive in areas of violation of the peace agreement.
