The Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Egypt has apologized after the South Sudanese national flag was inadvertently displayed upside down during an official diplomatic engagement in Cairo.
The incident occurred during a meeting between South Sudan’s Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Kuol Nyok Kuol Arop, and Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar.
Photographs from the meeting showed the South Sudanese national flag positioned incorrectly in the background, prompting attention and reactions after the images circulated.
In an official statement, the Embassy acknowledged the improper positioning of the flag and said the mistake was not noticed at the time of the meeting. It described the incident as an unintentional oversight and expressed regret over the display of the national symbol.
“The Embassy holds the National Flag of the Republic of South Sudan in the highest respect and dignity, and we extend our sincere apologies for this inadvertent mistake,” the Embassy said.
The diplomatic mission emphasized that the incident was accidental and did not represent any intention to disrespect the national flag, the Republic of South Sudan, or its people.
The Embassy also appealed for understanding, expressing appreciation for the continued friendship and cooperation between South Sudan and Egypt.
It reaffirmed the importance of the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries, which includes cooperation in areas such as health, education, trade, diplomacy and other sectors of mutual interest.
The meeting between Ambassador Kuol and Minister Abdel Ghaffar was part of ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries. South Sudan and Egypt maintain close relations, with Cairo playing an important role in South Sudan’s diplomatic and regional affairs.
While the upside-down flag display was acknowledged as a mistake, the Embassy’s apology appeared aimed at clarifying that the incident was not deliberate and should not be interpreted as a sign of disrespect toward South Sudan’s national identity or its relations with Egypt.
National flags carry significant political and symbolic importance, particularly during official diplomatic meetings where protocol and national representation are closely observed. Any improper display can therefore attract public attention, even when caused by an innocent or technical error.
The Embassy’s statement sought to put the incident in context, stressing its respect for the national flag and the dignity it represents.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of careful attention to diplomatic protocol and the proper handling and display of national symbols during official engagements.
The Embassy did not indicate that any disciplinary action had been taken over the incident, maintaining that the incorrect display was an inadvertent mistake.
