The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services (MoICT&PS) in collaboration with the World Bank has announced plans to begin laying a cross-border fiber optics cable from Kenya into South Sudan early next year.

The announcement was made Thursday by Mabe Emmanuel, Secretary General of the Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF), following the 13th leadership meeting of the Ministry held in Juba on Thursday.

In a statement to the media after the meeting Mabe, said preparations are underway to recruit technical experts to conduct feasibility studies and environmental assessments ahead of the groundbreaking slated for 2026.

According to him the initiative is expected to significantly improve internet infrastructure and digital connectivity in the youngest east African nation.

“This is a major milestone for the Ministry under the leadership of Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth. The fiber cable will be a game-changer in boosting access to reliable and affordable internet for South Sudanese,” said Mabe.

The leadership meeting also reviewed a proposal to renovate the aging “Radio-Juba” premises, with the aim of relocating the Ministry’s headquarters from its current overcrowded location.

The planned renovation is estimated to cost $4 million USD. Engineer Mabe said the new headquarters would provide a more efficient and spacious working environment for the Ministry as it continues to expand its digital infrastructure agenda.

The World Bank’s support is part of broader efforts to strengthen South Sudan’s digital transformation and integrate the country into regional and global communications networks.
