Vice president, UNMISS boss discusses South Sudan peace matters

The Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan and chair of infrastructure cluster Taban Deng Gai and UN head of Mission in South Sudan H.E Nichloas Hayom on Tuesday discussed peace and security matters.

According to the statement extended to the media the two-leader meeting was centred on seeking ways to ensure that all parties engaged dialogue.

Considering the recent security situation in Upper Nile state and other parts of the country, the meeting focus on means to deescalate the violent in the country.  

“Today met the UN head of Mission in South Sudan H.E Nichloas Hayom to discuss peace and security in the country considering the recent security mishaps in Upper Nile” the statement partly read.

“The meeting also discussed the need for dialogue between the two principal parties to the agreement so as to keep the R-ARCSS alive and keep the country on the path of transition towards democratic elections” it added.

According to the statement, Mr. Haysom highlighted the commitment of the international community in supporting South Sudan to maintain the momentum towards implementation of the remaining provisions of the agreement.

On his part Taban assured the UN in the country that the government under the leadership of President Salva is interested in fully implementing the R-ARCSS so that the country transitions to democratic arrangements and reduce the burden of the huge government.

Among the current matters at hand include the house arrest of Dr. Riek Machar the Chairperson of Sudan People Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) as well as armed confrontations among parties to 2018 peace agreement.  

Last week the Vice President and the Chairperson of Infrastructure cluster Taban Deng Gai reiterated President Salva Kiir commitment toward the implementation of 2018 Peace agreement.

According to the statement extended to the media, VP Gai made the remark while meeting Ethiopian’s Ambassador, Nebil Mahdi on Friday.

VP statement came at the time the 2018 peace agreement continue to face a lot of challenges including the concern from the arrest of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar as well as confrontations between peace parties.

The two leaders discussed important matters of peace and infrastructure development between the two nations.

VP Taban says that despites several challenges in the 2018 peace agreement President Salva Kiir remain committed to ensure that peace agreement is implemented.

He echoed that President Kiir and the government at large remain committed to prevent any violent that may derail the peace agreement.    

“The vice president reaffirmed the commitment of H.E. President Salva Kiir to not returning the country back to war” the statement partly read.

He appealed to Ethiopian governments to support South Sudan in the security arrangements as crucial part of the 2018 peace agreement.

On his part Ambassador Nebil Mahdi recalled the historical ties between Ethiopia and South Sudan and the importance.

He Promised that the Federal Democratic Republic remain committed in supporting South Sudan many areas such peace and development among others.
