The Vice President for the Service Delivery Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, says the South Sudan Opposition Alliance supports holding general elections in December 2026, while urging political parties to use dialogue to resolve outstanding issues under the country’s peace agreement.
Abdelbagi, who spoke at the inauguration of newly renovated office premises in Juba Nabari on Thursday, said the alliance remains in favor of holding the elections as scheduled despite unresolved provisions of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.
“Let me be clear, the R-TGONU has been extended twice, 2022–2024 and 2024–2026, in an attempt to complete the implementation of the remaining provisions of the revitalized peace agreement,” VP. Abdelbagi said.
The latest extension of the transitional period is due to expire in 2026, with elections scheduled for December. However, several key provisions of the peace agreement remain incomplete, including aspects of the security and political transition, raising questions over the country’s readiness for the polls.
Abdelbagi stated that the two extensions were intended to give the parties more time to implement outstanding provisions of the peace deal and prepare the country for elections.
“But here we are again,” Abdelbagi said, pointing to the continued challenges surrounding implementation of the agreement as the country approaches another political deadline.
The Vice President further called on the parties to the peace agreement to engage in inter-party dialogue to resolve the remaining issues, while maintaining that the Opposition Alliance supports holding the December 2026 elections as planned.
