The Government of South Sudan has confirmed the house arrest of the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.  

The Minister of Information, Communication, Technology, and Postal Services and the government spokesperson Micheal Makuei Lueth has confirmed Dr. Riek Machar arrest and said that the peace agreement is in progress.

The leader of Sudan People Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) was put under house arrest on Wednesday following series of confrontations by the army forces.

while addressing Journalists on Friday, Makuei called on the public not to panic citing that Dr. Machar house arrest is procedural and was meant to prevent the violent.

Makuei claimed that the decision to put Dr. Machar under house arrest is to allow investigation over the conflict in Nasir and other part of the country.

“this is to inform you that the First Vice President is under House arrest and he will be investigated and the outcome of the investigation will be known to you” said Makuei

“His Excellence the President Directed the arrest, people have been saying this is the violation of the agreement does the agreement allow anybody to take the lives of others” Makueiquestioned.

“Anybody who is obstructing the agreement will not be tolerated” he said

He claimed that the 2018 peace agreement is in progress despite of the arrest of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.

while addressing Journalist on Friday Makuei called on the public not to panic citing that Dr. Machar house arrest is procedural and was meant to prevent the violent.

He added that while Dr. Machar remain under house arrest under investigation, other members of the Sudan People Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) continue with their various roles and implementation of the peace agreement.

The Minister added all the party’s signatory to the peace agreement including the SPLM/A-IO remain committed to the 2018 peace implementation.

Makuei acknowledged that some members of the SPLM/A-IO left Juba after Dr. Machar arrest, adding that such cases can not bring peace to an end.
