The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) has partnered with UNOPS to launch a $9.98 Million project to combat flooding and improve water Access in South Sudan.

Announced on Tuesday the new partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to implement a critical USD 9.98 million project aimed at enhancing flood protection and improving access to clean water for communities across South Sudan. The one-year initiative is supported by the World Bank.

The project, titled the Resilient Communities and Rural Infrastructure Project (RCRIP), will focus on a range of essential interventions, including: Repairing and reinforcing dikes and drainage systems in areas particularly vulnerable to seasonal flooding.

Other interventions are, rehabilitating handpumps and wateryards to restore and secure safe water supplies for thousands of people and engaging directly with local communities to build long-term resilience against climate-related shocks and foster sustainable water management practices.

Meanwhile the initiative is set to benefit communities in Upper Nile, Jonglei, Eastern Equatoria, and Lakes States, regions that have been disproportionately affected by recent floods and water insecurity.

In a statement to the media Hon. Achier Manyuat John, Undersecretary of the MWRI, highlighted the government’s commitment to the project’s success.

“The Ministry is fully committed to accountability and transparency in delivering these life-changing interventions,” he stated.

“This project is a testament to our collective dedication to building a resilient and water-secure South Sudan.” He further stated

The partnership underscores a shared commitment to addressing the dual challenges of climate change and water scarcity, which threaten the livelihoods and safety of countless South Sudanese citizens.

By combining the ministry of water resources’s local expertise with UNOPS’s operational efficiency and the World Bank’s financial support, the project aims to deliver tangible and lasting benefits.

“Together, we are building a resilient and water-secure South Sudan,” the Ministry’s Undersecretary statement added.
