Local authorities in Pigi County, Jonglei State, have confirmed the deaths of three individuals, including a 30-year-old mother, following an outbreak of cholera case in Kowac Payam.
The surge has also resulted in seven reported cases at Kowac Primary Health Care Center within a span of one week.
Monykuer Lam Ayul, Director of Information in the Commissioner’s Office, expressed concern over the deteriorating situation, citing a severe shortage of essential medical supplies needed to manage the situation.
“The situation remains dire due to the lack of medicine for treating cholera,” Ayul said.
“On Wednesday, we lost two people a man and a woman and on Thursday, a 30-year-old woman passed away, leaving behind a one-year-old baby. It’s truly heartbreaking,” He stated.
Ayul added that the number of patients continues to rise.
He blamed the worsening conditions on rumors of insecurity which has scared a humanitarian organization that previously offered support.
He called on humanitarian agencies, the state Ministry of Health, and the national government to urgently provide cholera medication and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) supplies to the affected communities.
Ayul urged residents of Pigi to observe proper hygiene and sanitation practices to help prevent the further spread of the disease.
