The Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Peter Mayen Majokdit has on President Salva Kiir to reinstate 28 states to ensure equal power share as part of solution to the conflict in South Sudan.

Mayen is the Chairman of the Umbrella of Political Parties, and the leader of the People’s Liberal Party (PLP) and a signatory to the 2018 peace agreement now facing a lot of challenges.

According to Mayen, who is a signatory to the 2018 peace agreement facing challenges, he claimed that 28 states will ensure equal sharing of power as well as resources.

He noticed the current conflict in the country is related to the power and resources and there is a need for the government to consider returning the country back to 28 states as part of the solution.

“The reconsideration of returning to the 28 states system. This is not merely an administrative adjustment but a pathway to address the challenges posed by the current 10-state structure and to lay a foundation for a peaceful, inclusive, and democratic South Sudan” Mayen said

He expressed because of the ten states separate areas remain withy poor structures and services.

“Under the 10-state system, resources are disproportionately allocated, leaving many rural areas underserved while urban centres receive more attention. This disparity exacerbates inequalities and hinders national development efforts” he expressed.

He blames series of communal conflict across the country to the fewer state which she calm to encourage politicians to compete through dividing the communities.

“The concentration of power in fewer states has intensified competition among ethnic groups for control over resources and political positions. This dynamic has fuelled local conflicts and undermined reconciliation efforts at both community and national levels” he said

Mayen calm that under 28 states it will be ease to provide service as well as Equal power sharing.
“If it’s a pressure, there will be no pressure under Earth and the Sun that will make President Kiir cancel the 32 states,” Kiir Press Secretary Ateny Awek, 2019.

In 2015, South Sudan’s warring Parties signed an agreement on the basis of 10 states as enshrined in the South Sudan’s Transitional Constitution.

However, the Kiir administration made a unilateral decision and increased the number of states to 28 and later to 32, a move bitterly criticized by the opposition groups, was considered a flagrant violation of the Constitution and the Peace Agreement.

After serious criticism, President Salva Kiir in 2020 returned the country to 10 states and Three Administrative Areas.
