Greenbelt Academy High School was on Friday crowned champions of the third edition of the South Sudan Debaters Contest.

The school opposed the motion and scored 249 points, narrowly defeating Amazing Grace High School, which finished as the runners-up with 243 points.

The debate, held under the theme “Peace, Justice, and Equality,” featured seven competing schools.

As winners, Greenbelt Academy will represent Jonglei State in the upcoming national debaters contest scheduled to take place in Juba this year.

Chief Judge Manyok Philip Deng officially announced Greenbelt Academy as the winners of the third edition of the contest in Jonglei State.

“This team has done a lot—they researched and gave their best. The team that debated on the side of the opposition, Greenbelt Academy, are the champions,” he declared.

Mr. Manyok also expressed optimism about the future of debating in Jonglei.

Ayuen Abraham Panchol, a debater from Greenbelt Academy, shared her excitement  the win.

“I feel amazed. I never thought we would make it this far. I’m really grateful for what we’ve accomplished. This program doesn’t just show which school is the best; it teaches children more about society and life,” she said.

She also encouraged fellow students not to be discouraged by the results.

Nhial Adak, Principal of Amazing Grace High School, called on the state Ministry of Education to support activities that nurture students’ talents.

“If anyone approaches the ministry with the aim of bringing schools together, please support that initiative. This is one of the best ways we can support education in Jonglei State,” Adak said.

Meanwhile, Majuch Anyar of Amazing Grace High School was recognized as the Best Debater of the final debate.

Shiek El Nur High School was the winner of the second edition of the South Sudan Debaters Contest in Jonglei in 2024.

The contest was organized by the Teachers Without Borders Association in Bor.
