The Ministry of Health has reported a significant reduction in cholera cases in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, just one week after the rollout of a vaccination campaign in the region.

According to the Minister of Health in Greater Pibor Ochon John, health facilities in the area are now recording only a few new cases.

Despite the progress, Minister Ochon appealed to the national government and health partners to support the transportation of vaccines to remote and hard-to-reach areas.

‘’The situation in Pibor is a bit getting better. There is reduction of cases in the areas like Pibor, Gumuruk and Likuangole. We still need to reach to other areas like the cattle camps to vaccinate people there but due to logistical challenges we are unable. We call on the national government to facilitate the transportation of vaccines to those far areas,’’ he said.

With the rainy season approaching, Ochon said the ministry is ramping up preventive measures.

The Minister noted that his team, in collaboration with partnering organizations are intensifying public awareness campaigns aimed at minimizing the spread of the disease.

‘’We are conducting awareness about the coming rainy season including the distribution of water treatment tablets. We are also educating them on hygiene and sanitation to prevent the spread of the disease for example avoiding open defecation,’’ he stated.

Health official reiterated the importance of sustained support and vigilance to prevent a resurgence of the disease, especially in the areas that are always flooded.
