NTC Chairperson meets Kiir, calls for support to finalize 2018 peace tasks

The Chairperson of the National Transitional Committee (NTC), Kuol Manyang Juuk briefed President Salva Kiir on the progress and the challenges in the assignment.

The National Transitional Committee, established under the 2018 peace agreement, is tasked with overseeing and coordinating the implementation of the agreement, with a specific focus on security reform, governance, and reconciliation.

According to the statement obtained from the presidential press Unit (PPU), Kuol Manyang Juuk, Senior Presidential Advisor engaged the presidents on initiatives aimed to strengthen implementation of the pending tasks.

The NTC leader reiterated commitment towards implementation of the remain tasks in the 2018 peace agreement.

As NTC double efforts to ease and finalize the implementation of the remaining task of the peace agreement, Advisor Manyang urged the partners to support the institution.

“He (Kuol Manyang Juuk,) appealed to peace partners and stakeholders to step up their support, particularly in implementing the security arrangements stipulated in Chapter Two of the agreement” the statement read.

According to the statement, the NTC chairperson revealed proprogress of the implementation of the security arrangements outlined in the peace agreement

He reiterated that the committee remain committed towards the implementation of the provisions of the peace agreement, with security arrangements at the top of the agenda.

Manyang revealed that the budget requires to complete pending tasks in the peace agreement is about completion.

He described the budget preparation as crucial steps inaccelerating the overall peace implementation process.

President Salva Kiir expressed full support toward the National Transitional Committee (NTC) in order to enhance implementation of the 2018 peace agreement.

The President reiterated government commitment toward peace implementation and the upcoming election scheduled for 2026.

Recently civil society activist is Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) appealed to the newly reconstituted National Transitional Committee (NTC) leadership to convene an urgent meeting to address the pending tasks in the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.

In a statement to the media, Yakani appealed for the development of a clear and inclusive action plan to guide the transitional period, which runs from 22ND of February, 2025, to 22ND of February, 2027.

“I appeal to the newly reconstituted leadership of the National Transitional Committee, NTC, to hold an immediate meeting for reviewing and for coming out with a clear and concrete action plans for delivering the pending tasks of the R-ARCSS within the extended transitional period which starts from 22nd February 2025 and ending in 22nd February 2027,” he said.

He added the period is vital for creating conditions necessary for holding elections scheduled for December 2026.

“We are aware that in this particular period of time a good enough condition can be created for holding of election in December 2026”, he said.

He further raised concerns about key issues that need urgent attention to ensure credible elections next year
