The spokesperson of the South Sudan National Police Service, Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka has revealed that the crackdown on gangs will continue in the Gumbo-Sherikat despite the arrest of twenty.

This statement followed an incident where a young girl was reported to have been gang-raped in the Gumbo-Sherikat residential area.

Meanwhile, the transitional constitution defines a child as anyone under the age of 18 and further states that the best interests of the child will be protected in all matters related to his or her life.

General Monday revealed to the media on Saturday that 20 more youths believed to be gang members were arrested at Gumbo-sherikat as police hunted down criminals in the area.

“The IGP directed the assistant inspector general for criminal investigations to deploy a special force to apprehend the criminals, and they have so far arrested 20 criminals, adding to those four people in connection with the gang rape,” he said.

On Thursday a disturbing footage appears to show the minor girl being forced into sexual acts by a group of youths who recorded the incident in the Sherikat neighbourhood.

The shocking incident that is believed to have happened some days back made police start a serious operation leading to the arrest of two people.

General Monday confirmed that the police are taking police calls seriously and are conducting a series of operations to make sure that crime is reduced in Sherikat.

“We have arrested many, and we shall continue to arrest more until crimes reduce in Gumbo Sherikat,” he said.

South Sudan’s Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare condemned a horrific sexual assault perpetrated against a young lady in Gumbo-sherikat.

Aya Benjamin Libo Warille expressed disappointment and urged security forces to ensure the culprits of Thursday’s incident are punished.

A disturbing footage on Thursday, appeared on social media, showing a girl being forced into sexual acts Sherikat neighbourhood by a group of youth who recorded the incident.

Responding to this terrible incident, the Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare condemned the incident and called for justice.

“I speak before you today with a heavy heart and profound anger. The recent horrific sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl by a group of more than six boys is an unspeakable act of violence that demands our strongest condemnation,” she said.

She added that the incident amounts to a grave violation of human rights and a tragic assault on the dignity and safety of young women and girls in the country.
