The government of South Sudan has unveiled the South Sudan Development Plan (SSDP) 2026-2036, a comprehensive, decade-long strategy aimed at fostering stability, resilience, and sustainable development across the nation.

The plan was officially unveiled by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Athian Ding Athian, at a ceremony attended by senior government officials and key development partners.

Minister Athian described the launch as a “pivotal moment” for the country, emphasizing that the plan is designed to transform the aspirations of the South Sudanese people into tangible reality.

He stressed that the SSDP’s success hinges on a collective responsibility and close cooperation among all stakeholders.

The plan incorporates lessons from previous national strategies to address systemic challenges while charting a new path toward economic diversification and resilience.

The ceremony also featured remarks from UN Resident Coordinator, Anita Kiki, who acknowledged the complex challenges facing South Sudan.

She noted that the country continues to grapple with overlapping humanitarian, economic, and political crises, exacerbated by the conflict in Sudan, climate shocks, and disease outbreaks.

“Resolving differences through dialogue, making public commitments to peace and engaging all voices and viewpoints will be critical to move the country forward,” Kiki stated.

She expressed the development partners’ belief that transitioning to a long-term plan offers a unique chance to reset the nation’s development trajectory.

Meanwhile the Parliamentary Chairperson for the Specialized Committee for Finance and Economic Planning, Hon. Michael Ayuen, applauded the Ministry of Finance and Planning and its partners for their dedicated efforts.

He assured that the National Assembly would follow the process closely and provide its input to ensure the plan is holistically endorsed.

The SSDP 2026-2036 is scheduled to be officially implemented in June of next year, aligning with the nation’s new budget calendar.
