South Africa has reiterated its unwavering support for the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement of South Sudan during a high-level meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile in Juba on Thursday.

Mashatile, who also holds the position of South Africa’s Presidential Special Envoy to South Sudan, engaged in discussions with President Kiir to evaluate the progress of the peace accord’s implementation and to identify strategies for advancing its key provisions ahead of the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2026.

Following the meeting, South Sudan’s Ambassador to South Africa, Simon Duku, commented on the delegation’s two-day visit, which commenced on Wednesday. He stated that the purpose was to bolster political cooperation and enhance Pretoria’s support for the ongoing peace implementation process.

“The visit aims to strengthen political ties and deepen support for the current peace implementation efforts,” Duku explained. “Such engagement is vital for ensuring a peaceful and democratic transition within the country.”

South African Ambassador to South Sudan, Mahlodi Muofhe, characterized the meeting as “cordial and constructive,” underscoring both nations’ shared conviction that the successful implementation of the peace agreement is critical for establishing lasting stability in the region.

Muofhe also highlighted the need for continued collaboration between Juba and Pretoria, particularly in investment and economic development areas, which he believes could yield significant benefits for both countries.

Officials pointed out the historical ties between South Sudan and South Africa, rooted in their shared struggles for liberation, which continue to foster robust bilateral relations and collaboration in peacebuilding initiatives.

The 2018 Peace Agreement includes several key provisions, such as the establishment of a permanent constitution, transitional security arrangements, and the preparation for national elections essential steps towards achieving a peaceful resolution to the transitional period.

Deputy President Mashatile’s visit reaffirms South Africa’s enduring commitment to promoting peace, stability, and democratic progress in South Sudan.
