South Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening African-led efforts to prevent conflicts and promote peace and stability across the continent, as the African Union considers stronger mechanisms for early warning, conflict prevention and resolution.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. James Pitia Morgan, made the commitment during the opening of the 26th Extraordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council in Luanda, Angola.
The extraordinary session brings together African leaders and senior government officials to deliberate on ways of strengthening the continent’s capacity to anticipate conflicts, respond to emerging security threats and advance African-led solutions to longstanding peace and security challenges.
South Sudan’s participation places Juba among African governments backing greater continental cooperation at a time when conflicts and political instability continue to pose major challenges to peace and development across Africa.
The South Sudanese government has expressed support for efforts to improve the AU’s conflict-prevention architecture, particularly mechanisms designed to identify warning signs before disputes escalate into violence.
The emphasis on early warning and early action seeks to strengthen the ability of African institutions and member states to respond to emerging crises before they develop into full-scale conflicts.
For South Sudan, whose own history has been heavily shaped by armed conflict and political instability, the issue carries particular significance.
The country has repeatedly relied on regional and continental diplomatic mechanisms to support peace processes and conflict resolution, making stronger African peace and security institutions an important component of its foreign-policy engagement.
Addressing the session, Minister Morgan reaffirmed South Sudan’s readiness to work collectively with regional and continental partners in addressing Africa’s peace and security challenges.
