Local authorities in Akobo County are appealing to the government and humanitarian agencies for immediate medical supplies to combat a worsening cholera outbreak in Walgak village.
Akobo County Commissioner Puok Nyang reported that health centers in the area lack essential medical supplies to treat patients effectively.
He warned that without urgent intervention, the outbreak could escalate and spread to neighboring villages.
‘’A report has already been shared with the ministry of health about the cholera cases in Walgak which is still one of the areas with many cases.’’ He stated.
‘’I still call on the humanitarian agencies in the state and national to urgently intervene in the situation in Walgak because the disease can spread to other areas if we not well managed.’’ He said.
According to Nyang, the medical supplies provided by the state ministry of health and its partners are insufficient to meet the needs of the entire county.
In the meantime, he urged residents of Walgak to practice proper sanitation and hygiene to reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
A report from Jonglei State Health Ministry indicates that Akobo County recorded 1511 cases and 16 deaths since 2024 to date.
It however, reported that as the situation worsens, new cases emerge daily.
