The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) has called on South Sudan’s Ministry of Higher Education to ensure a transparent and fair selection process for scholarships recently announced for Ethiopian universities.
Made public Wednesday by the ministry, the scholarships are intended for South Sudanese citizens seeking to pursue higher education out of the country.
Following reports of malpractices of similar scholarship opportunities for India recently, the civil society advocacy body, CPA issued a strong statement on Wednesday, emphasizing that these scholarships are a crucial opportunity in a region where access to quality education is a significant challenge.
However, the organization raised concerns about past irregularities and favoritism in how these opportunities have been awarded.
“We are calling on the Ministry to avoid any form of bias or corruption. Every eligible student, regardless of background, deserves a fair chance.” Said Ter
The activist highlighted that education is a fundamental human right, and all South Sudanese youth should have equal access to academic opportunities based on merit and regional inclusivity.
The CPA warned that a failure to uphold transparency could erode public trust and prevent deserving students from receiving life-changing opportunities.
The organization also urged civil society, student unions, and the media to closely monitor the selection process.
Applications for the Ethiopian university scholarships are currently open, with the selection process expected to begin soon.
