The Ezo County community residing in Yambio has officially congratulated the newly sworn-in Governor of Western Equatoria State, Barrister James Al Taib Berapai, pledging their full allegiance while also urging for greater political representation and development support in their county.
In a message delivered on behalf of the community, the delegation expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for returning Western Equatoria State to the SPLM leadership earlier this year, a decision they believe ended what they described as “a reign of intimidation and humiliation” under the previous SPLM-IO administration.
“We were not surprised when your appointment as Governor came out first on SSBC. It was a moment of relief and joy, knowing that our long plea and loyalty to the SPLM had finally been recognized,” the statement read.
The delegation recalled that the people of Ezo were among the first to march on the streets demanding SPLM’s return, a move that they say demonstrated their courage and loyalty to the ruling party.
While congratulating Governor Berapai, the Ezo community also highlighted a number of challenges facing their county, including poor road networks, collapsed infrastructure, and a lack of political recognition despite their historic contributions during South Sudan’s liberation struggle.
Ezo County, with an estimated population of over 120,000 people across six payams and a strategic location bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, is considered one of the state’s most resourceful counties.
Yet, residents say they have been sidelined in political appointments and state leadership structures.
“Our county has always stood firm with the SPLM, from the struggle to the CPA and even now. But we feel we have not received a fair share in ministerial posts, commissions, and other political opportunities,” the message emphasized.
The community further appealed to Governor Berapai to prioritize the rehabilitation of feeder roads, the revival of Bangani FM Radio for peace messaging, and the completion of the local airstrip to boost trade and agricultural exports.
They also raised concerns over the collapse of Ezo’s only secondary school and health facilities, calling for urgent government attention.
“We hope under your leadership, the people of Ezo will enjoy peace, security, and political recognition. Our youths, women, and intellectuals are ready to contribute to state development if given the opportunity,” the statement added.
The congratulatory message concluded with renewed allegiance to the governor and the SPLM leadership, expressing optimism that Governor Berapai’s background in law and governance will translate into practical reforms that address the community’s concerns.
