Hiyala FC secured a dominant victory over Lokoya United FC in the ongoing Monyeimiji Football Tournament held yesterday at the Juba National Stadium.
This marks Hiyala FC’s fourth win in the tournament’s history.
The Monyeimiji Football Tournament, a peaceful and culturally vibrant event, is an annual football competition primarily featuring teams from Eastern Equatoria State, specifically among Otuho-speaking communities.
A total of 32 teams are participating in this year’s edition, which is being played in Central Equatoria State.
The stadium atmosphere was electric yet peaceful, with fans from all sides celebrating wins through traditional dances.
The tournament continues to be praised for promoting unity and social cohesion among communities.
Speaking to fans and attendees, the tournament’s sponsor, Joseph Gama, emphasized the significance of the Monyeimiji Tournament in fostering peace and unity.
“Over the years, this tournament has brought peace to the people of Eastern Equatoria and South Sudan at large. I hope the organizers can consider expanding it to include other tribes like the Madi, Acholi, and Pari-Lopon to truly represent the spirit of Eastern Equatoria,” Gama said.
David Okimo, Chairperson of the Monyeimiji Football Tournament, addressed rumors circulating on social media regarding tensions between Ifotu FC and Hiyala FC.
“We are here to promote peace, not conflict. Let us not carry vengeance. Let us respect one another and leave this tournament with unity,” Okimo urged.
He congratulated all participating teams and encouraged continued unity, love, and friendship among players and fans.
Representing the government of South Sudan, Minister of Environment and Forestry, Josephine Napon Cosmos, also addressed the gathering.
She highlighted the importance of football in uniting the youth and communities.
“I bring greetings from President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who is proud of this tournament. Football is a powerful tool for unity in our nation,” said Josephine.
She also urged the South Sudan Football Association to prioritize talent and fairness over corruption and tribalism when selecting players for national teams.
The Monyeimiji Football Tournament continues to be a shining example of peace-building through sports in South Sudan.
