Authorities in South Sudan’s Jonglei State have on Thursday reinforced internal security measures following last week’s violent clashes between the Red Belt armed youth group and state security forces.
The state government has deployed additional national security forces and introduced advanced surveillance vehicles to help curb insecurity and maintain peace.
This development was highlighted during a courtesy visit to the state government by Major General Deng Akeen Deng, Chief of Operations of the National Security Service, who underscored the importance of strengthening security cooperation and deepening strategic ties with Jonglei.
Major General Deng commended Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kokfor his unwavering commitment to peace and stability, noting that the Governor’s leadership has greatly motivated security forces to intensify their efforts in maintaining calm across the state.
In his remarks, Governor Riek expressed gratitude to President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the National Security Services for their continued support in safeguarding lives and property.
He further praised the professionalism of security agencies operating in Jonglei, crediting their collaboration and sacrifices for the state’s steady return to peace.
“Today, Jonglei State is being celebrated for the return of peace, and that would not have been possible without your tireless efforts and partnership. Your patriotism and passion for duty have made this achievement a reality,” Governor Riek said.
He also described the relationship between the Jonglei State Government and the National Security Service as a family-oriented partnership, reiterating his administration’s readiness to continue supporting security operations to preserve the prevailing peace.
The recent clashes erupted after a wrestling match between BorCounty and Yirol East County, leading to the loss of lives.
In response, Bor County Commissioner Samuel Ateny Pechformed a committee composed of members of parliament, chiefs, women’s representatives, and youth leaders to investigate the incident and foster reconciliation.
