‎President Salva Kiir is set to participate in the Africa Climate Summit 2 (ACS2), a pivotal continental conference aimed at accelerating global climate action, particularly as South Sudan grapples with significant climate-related challenges, including ongoing flooding in Jonglei State.
‎
‎The ACS2 Summit is scheduled for September 8–10, 2025, at the Addis International Convention Center (AICC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Pre-summit events will occur from September 5–7, 2025.
‎
‎This year’s summit theme, “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development,” seeks to gather support for climate financing, champion African-led initiatives, and bolster partnerships aimed at sustainable development throughout the continent.
‎
‎Ambassador Kureng Akuei Pac, Director General of Multilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, confirmed President Kiir’s attendance. He stated during the ministry’s weekly media briefing in Juba, “The government of South Sudan has been invited. President Salva Kiir will participate.”
‎
‎South Sudan’s involvement in the Summit underscores the nation’s escalating vulnerability to climate change and the pressing need for coordinated global and regional efforts.
‎
‎The situation in Jonglei State has become increasingly severe, with ongoing flooding displacing communities, destroying homes, and disrupting livelihoods. In late August, heavy rains inundated Panyagor, prompting more than 40,000 individuals to seek refuge on higher ground along the Jonglei Canal, where many are currently living in makeshift conditions.
‎
‎“We are facing numerous challenges, particularly due to climate change. Right now, there is flooding in Jonglei State. People are underwater, and they are suffering there,” Akuei remarked. “The summit will adopt resolutions that will specifically address the issue of climate change.”
‎
‎The ACS2 Summit is anticipated to be a crucial platform for African leaders to advocate for enhanced international climate financing, promote resilient infrastructure development, and ensure that Africa’s priorities are effectively represented and addressed on the global stage.
