President Salva Kiir will attend a forthcoming climate summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, where South Sudan plans to advocate for international solutions to the nation’s ongoing climate change challenges, and particularly devastating floods.

Ambassador Kureng Akuei Pac, the Director General of Multilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, confirmed President Kiir’s attendance during a weekly press briefing on Thursday.

He stated that the summit provides a crucial platform for South Sudan to express its national position on pressing issues of global climate change impact.

“When you are participating in an international or regional event, that gives you an opportunity to express yourself, the position of your country,” Ambassador Kureng said.

“So participation of the delegation of South Sudan will give South Sudan an opportunity to express our position, and resolutions to be adopted by that summit will be good for South Sudan.” He added

The Ambassador further highlighted the severe impact of climate change already being felt across the country.

“Now we are facing many problems or challenges as a result of climate change, these include floods.

We have floods now in Jonglei. As we speak, there is an area called Fangak, it is underwater. People are suffering there.” He emphasized.

He expressed confidence that the summit’s resolutions will address the climate crisis, providing a much-needed benefit for South Sudan’s affected population.

“I’m sure most of those resolutions will be addressing the climate change issue. So South Sudan will benefit out of it,” he concluded.
