A monumental debt dispute involving South Sudan government and claims exceeding $1 billion is set for a high-stakes hearing at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ).
The court has scheduled the proceedings for Thursday, October 30, 2025, at its headquarters in Arusha.
The case, which centers on an alleged breach of a settlement agreement, pits the Government of South Sudan—specifically its Ministry of Finance—against the applicant: South Sudan Supreme Airlines Co. Ltd represented by the law firm Pan African Law Chambers, LLP.
According to a statement issued by Pan African Law Chambers, LLP, the applicants are seeking redress over a $1.05 billion debt.
They accuse the South Sudanese government of not only breaching a prior settlement but also violating key provisions of the foundational East African Community (EAC) Treaty.
The hearing is scheduled to be held in open court in ArusaTanzania, offering public access to the proceedings of this significant regional legal challenge.
The applicant have assembled a formidable legal team to present their case.
A contingent of 19 lawyers will represent the interests of the airline and the law firm, with the team being led by Senior Counsel Wani Santino Jada.
The EACJ’s decision on this matter could have major implications for the Government of South Sudan and its adherence to regional agreements, particularly as it relates to financial obligations and the framework of the EAC Treaty.
