South Sudan’s government inaugurated the Agrofood Expo and Business Forum 2026, aiming to link local entrepreneurs with global opportunities to tap into the nation’s rich agricultural potential.
The expo, organized by the Ministry of Trade and Industry in collaboration with the Ministries of Investment, and Livestock and Fisheries, aims to create networking opportunities for business owners, startups, and investors in agriculture. Organizers view it as a crucial step to decrease the country’s heavy dependence on food imports.
Christine Ijino, Director General for Trade Fairs, described the event as a milestone, stating, “This expo demonstrates our confidence in harnessing South Sudan’s agricultural wealth to strengthen the economy, create jobs, and alleviate poverty.”
Minister of Trade and Industry Atong Kuol Manyang emphasized agriculture’s role in fostering peace and sustainable development. She criticized the nation’s reliance on imports despite its abundant resources and urged a transition from subsistence to commercial farming.
Lily Kafuki, Central Equatoria State Minister of Agriculture, linked food security to national stability, while Prosper Addo from the African Union highlighted the necessity of peace and infrastructure to unlock the sector’s full potential. He urged the government to invest 10% of its budget in agriculture, positioning the expo as a vital platform for economic transformation.
