The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) has issued a flash flood warning for several areas of South Sudan, with forecasts indicating an increased risk from August 17 to 20, 2025.

The warning, based on data from the Nile Basin Flash Flood Forecast & Early Warning System, highlights that thousands of people are at risk.

In the alert issued Thursday by the water ministry seen by the Nile Witness, the forecast identifies three levels of risk; Medium Risk: 32 locations, with approximately 33,192 people at risk, High Risk: 12 locations, with approximately 857 people at risk and finally Very High Risk: 2 locations, with approximately 138 people at risk.

According to the ministry’s weather updates the most vulnerable communities are concentrated in Upper Nile and Eastern Equatoria states.

In Upper Nile, the areas of Longochuk, Maiwut, Melut, Renk, and Maban are expected to be most affected. In Eastern Equatoria, Budi, Lafon, and Torit are under a heightened risk.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation urged residents in these flood-prone areas to take immediate precautions.

The ministry’s guidance includes a call for communities to “stay alert and follow local guidance,” “avoid risky crossings during heavy rains,” and “prepare early and protect family essentials.”

The warning emphasizes the importance of community resilience and preparedness in the face of the approaching weather patterns.

However the Ministry, along with partners such as the RCRP, World Bank, and the Nile Basin Initiative, is working to provide early warning information to help mitigate the potential impact of the floods.
