The Tumaini Peace Initiative between South Sudan government and the hold out group remain as Juba face obstacles in 2018 peace agreement.

The Tumaini Peace Initiative was indefinitely adjourned on February 8th because after government delegates return to Juba for other duties.

Hosted by the Kenyan Government, the high-level mediation process, known as the Tumaini Initiative (‘hope’ in Swahili), was originally launched in May 2024.
 
Tumaini Peace Initiative is between representatives of South Sudan’s Transitional Government of National Unity and hold-out groups that did not sign the 2018 peace agreement.

While South Sudan government push for the return of Pagan Amum, Malong Awan, Thomas Cirilo and many others to Juba through Tumaini in Nairobi, the process now remain in question.  

In a statement extend Media, Rajab Mohandis, a representative of the civil rights to the Tumaini talks call on the Citizen to push for Tumaini adding that it will provide solution to the ongoing crisis.

“At the moment, there is no negotiation at the Tumaini Peace Initiative, and there is no Tumaini Consensus agreement signed so there is need for Citizens to pressure the government focus on dialogue as well as coming back for Tumaini” he said

Recently confrontations between government forces and the opposition are reported at different part of the country.

The activist called on the government and the opposition forces to cease violent and focus on dialogue in areas of misunderstanding.

During the adjournment in February, the government delegation to Tumaini Talks requested a pause in negotiations to allow them to return to Juba to prepare for start of extension transitional period.

Speaking to journalists, Martin Elia Lomuro, the government rapporteur, confirmed that Kuol Mayang Juuk, the chair of the government delegation, requested a short break in the talks to allow the delegation to consult and prepare for the next phase of the peace process.
