A civilian was reportedly shot and wounded during a traditional gathering in Bor County, Jonglei State, after a confrontation allegedly broke out between security personnel and armed youth.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Pariak Centre in Chueikeer Payam, where chiefs for the Abii Community were being installed.

The gathering had brought together community members for traditional dancing and celebrations when tensions reportedly escalated.

John Deng Alier, Chairperson of the Chueikeer Payam Youth Association, told the The Nile Witness on Friday that a misunderstanding arose between members of the security forces accompanying the Bor County Commissioner and local youth taking part in the celebrations.

He alleged that security forces opened fire during the incident, leaving one young man with gunshot wounds.

“We strongly condemn the shooting and wounding of a young civilian during a public gathering,” he said.

Deng condemned what he described as the use of live ammunition at a gathering intended to be a peaceful cultural event, saying the shooting had created fear, distress and anger among community members and disrupted the traditional ceremony.

The incident comes amid wider concerns over security-related violence and tensions involving communities and security forces in parts of Jonglei State, where disputes and confrontations have previously raised concerns about civilian safety.

Community leaders have repeatedly called for restraint and peaceful resolution of local disputes, particularly during public and cultural gatherings.

Deng called on Bor County authorities, relevant security institutions, the Jonglei State Government and other competent authorities to investigate the incident, establish the facts and ensure that those responsible are held accountable through lawful means.

He further urged authorities to ensure justice for the wounded civilian and take steps to prevent similar incidents during future community and cultural gatherings.

“The installation of community chiefs, should serve as an occasion for unity, peace and cultural celebration rather than violence,” Deng said.
