The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed with South Sudan media stakeholders to strengthen the media environment in the country.

JICA has held a series of important discussions with key South Sudanese institutions, including the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology & Postal Service, the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) and the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) to launch a new project aimed at strengthening the country’s media environment.

The initiative is designed to promote freedom of expression and improve access to information, aligning with the broader goal of guaranteeing these rights across the nation.

The project will focus on four key areas; Developing a comprehensive media policy and strategy, Enhancing journalists’ recognition and capacity regarding freedom of expression, Establishing a self-regulatory body led by local media houses and  Improving public access to news while fostering critical media literacy among citizens.

These components are expected to create a more open and informed media landscape in South Sudan.

The discussions culminated in the official signing of the minutes of the meeting between JICA and the Ministry, with AMDISS and UJOSS witnessing the event.

Their presence underscores the collaborative spirit of the initiative and the commitment of various stakeholders to advancing media freedom and transparency in the country.
